BAGHDAD — Iraq’s influential Shi’ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has warned Arab leaders in the region of “the beginning of their end” after US President Donald Trump officially announced recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
“Arab people and leaders, it will be your end if you give up on Jerusalem,” Sadr said on his official Twitter account.
Earlier the day, Trump said the decision was “a long overdue step” to enhance the peace process in the Middle East.
The move however has angered Arab leaders across the region. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s office said on Tuesday, “The Iraqi government received this news with the utmost worry and warns about this decision’s ramifications on the stability of the region and the world.”
