ERBIL — Fierce armed clashes erupted between the Turkish troops and guerrillas of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the border areas between Kurdistan Region and southeast Turkey, the armed forces confirmed on Thursday, reporting casualties on both sides.

According to an official statement, the Turkish forces killed five PKK fighters early on Thursday while the Kurdish guerrillas were attempting to cross the border into Hakkari province’s mountainous Semdinli district.

At least six Turkish soldiers and two village guards were also killed in the clash.

Following an air operation, according to the statement, the Turkish forces killed another 12 PKK guerrillas.
