ERBIL — Airstrikes targeted early on Saturday the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces while advancing against Islamic State (IS) in Syria’s eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, an official said.
Ahmed Abu Khawla, head of the Deir ez-Zor Military Council, revealed to Reuters that the raid wounded six fighters of the SDF.
He further explained that the fighter jets had come from the direction of the territories held by the Syrian Regime.
He suspected the jets to be Russian or Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The Syrian government and SDF have both launched separate massive operations to recapture the territories from the Islamic State (IS) in Deir ez-Zor, both threatening the other side if they block their path against advancing.
The SDF is an alliance of Syrian Kurds and Arabs currently fighting IS on various fronts. The group is backed and equipped by Washington.
