ERBIL — The busloads of the Islamic State (IS) militants and their families stranded in the Syrian desert finally arrived in the IS-held territories of Der Azzor Province in eastern Syria.

The IS convoy that set out from Lebanon’s Qalamoun town on August 28, arrived in Deir Ezzor on Wednesday after the US-led coalition lifted the surveillance from the convoy, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Wednesday.

The Coalition drones had been monitoring the stranded 11-bus convoy and taking down any militant who attempted to separate from the convoy in the Syrian desert.

The US-led coalition pulled their aircrafts from the sky above the convoy according to an agreement with Russia, SOHR said.

“To ensure safe deconfliction of efforts to defeat ISIS, the coalition surveillance aircraft departed the adjacent airspace at the request of the Russian officials during their assault on Deir Ezzor,” the coalition said in a statement.

The vehicles, loaded with hundreds of militants and their families left the Lebanon-Syria border on August 28 under an evacuation deal negotiated between IS and the powerful Lebanese Shi’ite movement Hizbullah.
