ERBIL — Sipan Hemo, the People’s Protection Units’ (YPG) General Staff told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that if the Syrian government considers Afrin as part of Syria, then it has to help the YPG fighters against Turkey’s attacks and protect the canton.
If the Syrian army wants to enter Afrin and help the YPG fighters in the war, we will not pose any obstacles for it to enter the city, he added.
He also refuted the reports claiming that the Syrian government is backing the Kurds in Afrin, saying that the government has not helped them until now nor has it sent any humanitarian aid to the city.
Hemo condemned the Western countries’ attitude against the Turkish army’s attacks and asked them to ‘defend Afrin’ and do not stay silent because the Kurds fought against the Islamic State (IS) in the name of the whole world.
Reuters earlier claimed that the Syrian government has been helping the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) against the Turkish army and its-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) in their fight for Afrin.
The Turkish army and FSA continue their attack on Afrin which started since January 20.
